Mission Statement

Service and Supply Cooperative is a full service, cost-efficient cooperative. We are adaptable to buying trends, with knowledgeable employees, that lead the field in providing safe supplies and services to the environment and people while managing its equity and identity to the best interest of its members.

History

Our organization was established in 1965 at the New Florence location. The original board members were:

  • President Mike Palmer Sr., Montgomery City
  • Vice President Harry Bishop, Montgomery City
  • Secretary/Treasurer Doyle Windsor, Montgomery City
  • Director Orville Steffan, Montgomery City
  • William E. Cobb, Montgomery City

In the company’s first year, Marvin Poston was employed as the first manager with one employee at the New Florence branch. The Bellflower branch was added in 1986, followed by Vandalia in 1987, Bowling Green in 1996, Jonesburg and Rhineland in 2013, and Center in 2018.

Organization Structure

Service and Supply Cooperative is owned by local people who are patrons. The patrons meet at least once a year and elect a seven-member board of directors. That board of directors is the legal framework of the cooperative. The board of directors is primarily concerned with philosophy and objectives, while the general manager is primarily concerned with formulating plans of action to carry out the intentions of the board of directors. The board of directors is responsible for hiring a general manager to carry out their intentions as well as run the daily operations of the cooperative. The general manager is accountable to the board and initiates action within the boundaries of authority granted by the board. The by-laws of the cooperative define membership, voting requirements, and the distribution of earnings.
